K'gari is the world's largest sand island and an area of remarkable natural beauty. It was listed as a World Heritage Area in 1992 to recognise the island's internationally significant natural features. Over 166,000 hectares of evolving dune, lake, soil and forest systems help coastal heath, mangrove forests and swamps to subtropical rain forest thrive on seemingly infertile sands.
The name K'gari, which means Paradise in the native tongue, of the Butchella people, is derived from an Aboriginal Dreamtime story about a goddess named K'gari who fell in love with the earth and never wanted to leave. According to the story, the gods set out to find a place for the newly-created human race to live.

The Butchulla people are the Traditional Custodians of K'gari (the Butchulla place name for Fraser Island). For more than 5000 years, perhaps as many as 50,000 years, Butchulla people lived in harmony with the seasons and the land and sea, maintaining a balance between spiritual, social and family connections.
Today the Butchulla people continue to walk the cultural pathway of their ancestors, whom they believe have lived on this country since the beginning of the Dreaming. We acknowledge the Butchulla people as the Traditional owners of K'gari on which Sapphire Villa is set and pay respect to Elders past, present and future.
